My friend recently moved to the East Village and the location of her apartment could not be more perfect for brunch. One block from her new place is Poco, a small spanish inspired restaurant that has the best brunch deal I have ever encountered in NYC…all you can drink plus brunch for $22. Fo’ real! $22 you get one entree, coffee or tea, and unlimited bloody mary’s, mimosas or sangria. AKA the perfect solution for 8 hungover girls the morning after Santacon.
We weren’t even planning on drinking at brunch, but that deal was too good to pass up. Brunch turned a rainy and lazy Sunday into a fell-fledged Sunday Funday. Most of us went for the sangria and both the red and white were delicious. Not your normal mid-December cocktail, but just as refreshing as in the summertime. I love mason jars BTW.
The pancake special of the day was Heath Bar pancakes, so we ordered them as an appetizer. Normal? I liked them because they were thick and dense. Like a Sicilian pizza pancake with Heath Bar. Also the Heath Bar wasn’t overpowering or too sweet, just a little bit on the top was perfect.
The show stopper was Poco Benedict: crispy arepa, chorizo, manchego cheese and poached eggs, topped with pimentón hollandaise. I think 4 out of 8 of us ordered this. AREPA’S ARE THE BEST!!!! Benedict over a corn cake is the best idea ever, and it tasted even better than it sounds (and looks)! I think i’ll show another picture of it….
NOM NOM NOM.
Here we have the Lobster Benedict (also served atop an arepa), and this was excellent as well. I’m going to go out on a limb here…lobster and hollandaise should replace lobster and butter, because it’s better. Bold statement I know, but I’m pretty sure it’s accurate. If anyone has more research on this hypothesis, please let me know.
On top of all this amazing food, the service was friendly and accommodating. I will definitely be coming back to Poco next time I’m in NY during brunch time.
Poco is on the corner of East 3rd St. and Ave. B.
