Every year my boyfriend and I go out for dinner to celebrate my Birthday. We obviously go out to eat more than once a year, but I tend to dictate where we go more often than not; however, on my birthday he gets free reign. And every year I continue to be amazed by the delicious meals we end up devouring and the restaurants he ends up choosing (he took me to Mistral for my 21st, which just so happened to be the exact restaurant my mom celebrated her 50th birthday that same year… OH.)
This year was no different when he told me he’d chosen Ten Tables in Jamaica Plain. I have been meaning to try this restaurant for over a year now, so I was beyond ecstatic to hear this. Because of our busy schedules, we decided to go this past Monday. Normally when I go to a restaurant on a Monday night I don’t make a reservation because I usually don’t anticipate huge waits, well thank god that was not the case on this particular Monday because Ten Tables was PACKED! We could barely make it through the door. This got me excited, crowds mean good things, even though I usually hate them and avoid them at all costs. But in this case we were sat immediately and they even let us pick our own table. Well one of two tables, but still, it was perfectly situated in the corner amidst a very busy room.
Based on corner table, dim lighting and romantic ambiance alone my boyfriend was already at a 10 out of 10, but then our server came over with menus. Out of sheer excitement and happiness for all the amazing things that December brings (including my birthday) I decided to say screw it to picking my own meal, I was so convinced the chefs at Ten Tables knew what they were doing that I left the entire night in their hands, and the bartenders. To start we ordered a cocktail flight.
On a whim, the bartender threw together three mini cocktails which aside from being adorable were actually all quite tasty. From left to right we have the Lemon Sparkler with home made rosemary lemonade and champagne, the Thai Basil Gimlet with homemade thai basil lime juice and gin, and the Lavender Fizz made with lavender vodka and fresh blueberries.
All three blew me away, even my beer-loving boyfriend was impressed. So impressed that we ordered another one later one, which including a set of three new cocktails that were all just as good.
We had also told the server we wanted to try the chef’s 4 course tasting. One vegetarian, one non, which started to arrive right before the second flight.
After a failed attempt at photographing Dol’s Beet and Goat Cheese Terrine with Arugula & Pistachios, I decided it was time to start using the ultra annoying flash. During the second course I was only able to get a picture of my dish…
Third CourseHome Made Pappardelle with Delicata Squash, Chestnuts and Sage Brown Butter
Somewhere in the we ordered a beer flight.
Wow. It’s like I just relived the whole meal. Needless to say everything was spectacular. Literally spectacular (and I don’t think I ever use that word). From the atmosphere, the food, the service, the ambiance, the timing, everything was perfect and that’s a hard thing to come by.
Starting with the cocktails, all of which were flawless. You could tell they were made by a bartender who knows what he’s doing and loves it. The food was so rich and yet light at the same time, like the parppadelle covered in butter and squash or the Turkish potage, which was the perfect starter on a chilly night. The arctic char was cooked impeccably, as the crispy skin fell from the tender fillet. The steak was just right at medium-rare (without asking) and even the desserts stood out. Both had different flavor and texture combinations that worked so well together. This food was definitely not a mistake, it took a lot of thought and passion and you can definitely taste it in everything they serve you. The entire experience was ideal, the kind of place you tell all your friends they need to go because you still can’t stop thinking about how great everything was. Whatever expectations I had for this one, they have been FAR surpassed!
* They also offer wine themed dinners on Tuesdays which sound amaaazing!
